Everything You Need to Know About the New Tulum International Airport
The state of Quintana Roo is one of the most popular destinations in Mexico. Year after year, it attracts thousands of tourists who visit its beaches, cenotes, and archaeological sites, enjoying its natural beauty and all the activities that come with it.

The Tulum International Airport will be built in the Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality, where an area of 1,200 hectares has been set aside for the project. Linked to this is the construction of a row of stores and other commercial entities, spanning 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers), that’ll connect the new airport with the federal highway 307, which crosses the entire Riviera Maya and will bridge Cancun and the city of Chetumal.
It’s expected to be the second largest airport in the Yucatan Peninsula, after Cancun, and to receive over 4 million visitors a year!
The airport will have a military base in order to increase the safety of the area, assist the population in the event of a natural disaster, and deal with forest fires. Likewise, it’ll be connected to the current highway system and to sections 5, 6, and 7 of the Mayan Train that’s currently under construction.
The new airport will also have the longest runway in the southeast of 3,700 meters, a passenger platform, accessible parking, access for taxis and buses, and a Mayan Train terminal, significantly boosting transportation in the area as a whole.
The construction is headed by military engineers, and is expected to be finished at the end of 2023 and receive visitors as early as May 2024.
Its opening will alleviate the increasing crowding at the Cancun Airport, which receives thousands of tourists daily. In addition, it’ll serve as a security and emergency service center for the state of Quintana Roo.
Of course, the new Tulum International Airport is expected to increase the arrival of visitors to the Riviera Maya, triggering the demand for services of all kinds and thus being a key piece in the economic growth of the region.
