How safe is the Riviera Maya? | Tao Mexico

The Riviera Maya has it all - located just outside of Cancun, it’s home to Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen and more. The homes and condos for sale in this region are not far from the beach and situated on the edge of a seemingly endless stretch of Caribbean coastline which is why real estate is simply booming in this area.

If you’re like the rest of us who’ve visited the Riviera Maya and immediately fell in love with the scene, you may be considering buying a home in the area. You’re undoubtedly familiar with the hopping nightlife, the inviting white-sand beaches and the picturesque little Mexican towns all along the coast, but one topic that isn’t often covered is about safety.

Is it Safe to Live in the Riviera Maya?

Depending on the area you choose, the Riviera Maya is safe. For example, Akumal, a gorgeous little beach town, is considered one of the best places to live in the Mexican Caribbean.

The Riviera Maya covers an expansive area, it’s geographically just South of Cancun and is located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The real estate destinations in the Riviera Maya have all the benefits of being near Cancun, but are all much quieter locations that offer a peaceful and relaxed lifestyle of a small town.

This is the case for Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Puerto Aventuras - all coveted beach towns with an elevated quality of life.

Of course, whether we’re talking about a big city in Mexico, or in Italy or in the USA for that matter, it’s good to take basic security measures at home as well as when out in public. At home, it’s recommended to lock the doors and install a security system. Tourist areas that are crowded will always have opportunistic people who may attempt to pick pockets - but the best way to prevent this, no matter where you travel in the world, is to use bags that close with a zipper and stay in brightly lit, public places surrounded by people if you are walking at night.
